Salvatore Cascone was born in Ragusa on 29 June 1904 into a working-class family.
Since childhood he showed a special vocation for painting, but economic hardship hindered the pursuit of his vocation. After attending an art school in the nearby city of Comiso he moved on with great sacrifice to the “Beato Angelico” Higher School of Christian Art in Milan.
There he studied between 1926 and 1930, under the stewardship of architect and painter Mgr. Giuseppe Polvara, the then Director of the School, who, having appreciated his artistic qualities, entrusted him with works of considerable importance and great responsibility.
Having obtained the diploma of Master Painter, Salvatore Cascone remained in Milan, teaching drawing and painting in the same “Beato Angelico” school. In that period he frescoed churches in Lombardy, in Cernusco sul Naviglio (Milan) and in Venegono Inferiore (Varese). For family reasons, he moved to Sicily in 1937, where he carried out most of his artistic activity.
He devoted himself mainly to the decoration of churches and frescoes: the large wall compositions allowed him freedom of expression and creativity. He decorated many churches in Sicily, Lombardy and Calabria.
Besides frescoing he also devoted himself to oil and easel painting.
During his long artistic career he successfully organized several solo exhibitions.
Salvatore Cascone died on 18 May 1996 at the age of 92 in Sant’Agata Li Battiati (Catania), lovingly assisted by his daughter Maria Carmela in whose company he spent the last years of his life.
